Well things have been very quiet here over the last few weeks, a mixture of wrapping up client projects before the holidays start tomorrow as well as taking some time out to think about what I’d like to focus on in 2013. Needless to say there’ll be some exciting events and changes to come in the next few months! Top of my list is to launch the new website for The Darling Tree in the next few weeks, followed by making some awesome updates to the Your Darling Blog design workshop. There may also be some changes to August Empress but this is still up in the air, I’m sure things will become clearer in the new year.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you, my lovely readers, for your support and encouragement here over the last year. I’ve loved sharing with you all the things that inspire and excite me in the design world and beyond. I hope you have wonderful christmas and new year celebrations, enjoy your loved ones, and be merry!

Let’s catch up again in 2013.

x

Wander. Discover. Connect. Truth. Four things that I feel like I need more of in my life. This collection of photos seem to speak to me right now, if I could bottle them all up into a single moment, I think it would be pretty amazing.

I was lucky enough to spend the weekend in Byron Bay for the wedding of two amazing friends, it was so beautiful and such a great weekend I wish we could do it all over again.

Images 1, 2 – Arrived in Byron and headed straight for the beach to relax and catch up on some reading.

Image 3 – Enjoyed breakfast before heading off to meet the bride for hair and makeup

Image 4 – Hair and makeup done! Really loved the braids and soft curls, I wish I could do these things myself.

Images 5, 6 – Progress being made getting the venue pretty, the reception was held around the pool area, the garden area was being setup for games, with the ceremony in another little pocket of the estate.

Images 7, 8  – The ceremony, so perfect. And happy snap with the bride.

Images 9, 10  – Day after, the nice weather didn’t stick around, so some time was spent looking around the cool little boutiques.

Image 11   – Came home to a new toy, part of my Thirteen by 2013 to attend a darkroom class.

In the same fashion as last year’s Twelve before 2012 list, these are the things I’d like to get done by the time 2013 rolls around:

1. Pre-launch a new digital product

2. Redesign The Darling Tree‘s website
6/11: Most design done, copywriting and development will be done in January so there’s still a little wait.

3. Run 10km – DONE!
18/10: Bought this in neon pink/grey to track my runs here
4/11: 5km in 30:23 mins
9/11: 8km in 48:55 mins
30/11: I did it! 10km in 1 hr 2:33 mins

4. Book flights somewhere overseas

5. Finish the sketchbook project

6. Take a photography or darkroom class
23/10: Bought this 80′s film camera to take photos for class
6/12: Looking at this class for January

7. Go jet skiing

8. Finish a painting on canvas

9. Find a fabric to revamp some furniture

10. Read at least 6 books – DONE!
22/10: Looking for Alaska (Nowhere near at good as The Fault in Our Stars)
4/11: The perks of being a wallflower (Loved it!)
8/11: The Gifts of Imperfection (Exactly what I needed to read)
9/11: This Way to Spaceship (Love Rhys Darby, thought the book would be funnier)
10/11: Make Your Idea Matter (So much wisdom)

11. Volunteer at AWLQLD - DONE!
11/12: I now volunteer once a week with the dog team, loving it!

12. Pay off the credit card
6/12: Half way there!

13. Create a fun video for the blog
4/11: Have filmed some work in progress, may do a timelapse type of video

Do you have a list you’re working on? I’d love to hear what you’d like to achieve before the end of the year.

Today I’m back to work after spending the last few days in Melbourne, I had such an amazing time there. The first couple of days were cold and very wintery, but luckily the sun came out for the rest of the trip. Much exploring was done, there are so many good things about Melbourne: hidden cafes and laneways full of delicious restaurants, pretty old buildings, great little shops and boutiques, street art and design on every corner.

I can’t wait to visit again, I’d love to check out more of the creative community and design events next time. Do you live in or have you been to Melbourne, are there any little discoveries you’d love to share?

When it comes to my work as a designer and running my own business there’s a few key products and services which definitely help keep me organised, productive and motivated. I’ve created a list of some of my favourite and most useful tools in my daily designer toolkit.

Organisation

Evernote is the most useful program and app to take quick notes, collect research and save inspiration that you can access easily from any of your computers or devices. Most of my ideas and thoughts are added to lots of different notebooks, however my to-do lists and calendar is still a pen to paper exercise. I can’t live without an up-to-date list of what’s on my plate, and a clear idea of what’s on over the coming weeks. After experimenting with all different stationery products I always come back to kikki.K, and loving their latest To Do List and A4 Monthly Planner at the moment.

Another product I like to use for creative briefs and collecting clients thoughts on a project is Google Docs. It’s just a much nicer alternative to Word and it makes it easy to share and edit the same documents.

Business

A couple of months ago I made the switch from Quickbooks to the online invoicing and time tracking software by Harvest. Quickbooks was the only reason I was still holding onto my old PC laptop, as the online version for Mac is much too expensive. Of course Harvest isn’t full accounting software, it’s much more basic than that, but it’s made invoicing and payments much simpler for me and my clients which is the most important. I absolutely love the time tracking features, which means a lot as throughout the years of freelancing I’ve tended to not keep up with tracking my time accurately.

As much as people seem to dislike Paypal, I’ve never had any issues with them. Using them has made working with clients internationally and accepting payments a breeze.

Another important application I use for business is Dropbox. Sharing larger files with clients and keeping important artwork files and documents backed up is super easy and convenient.

Software

It goes without saying that Adobe products have a huge part in my business, Illustrator and Photoshop in particular, and occasionally InDesign makes an appearance. With the introduction of the Creative Cloud, it’s much more affordable than the previous Australian Design Suite subscription. A Creative Cloud subscription not only includes the whole range of Adobe products, but an unlimited Typekit account, 20GB of cloud storage and hosting for 5 Business Catalyst websites. It’s a pretty good deal.

On the other hand, coding and development is handled by two great pieces of software by Panic, Coda and Transmit. Coda is a web editor for Mac, and Transmit for file transfer. The new release of Coda 2 includes the capability of Transmit now, but I still use the older version.

Hardware

I am a huge Mac girl. I wasn’t always, I used to think PC’s were perfectly ok for doing my work and I’m sure that they have improved in the last few years. But I’ve had my iMac for close to 3 years now and it’s still just as quick without any issues that were common with a PC. Before my iMac I never owned a PC that was still running so well after even a year’s use. I pretty much have all the Apple products including a Macbook Air, but the iMac is number 1 for getting my work done.

Another piece of hardware I use a lot is my Wacom Bamboo tablet. I own the smaller sized tablet but it’s all I need to create quick little drawings or handwritten text that I can use in designs or just playing around. I’ve heard some designers and artists used their tablet as a mouse too but it would take some getting used to, I think you’d need a larger version to do that.

Music

When it comes to staying productive and motivated for long hours of designing, music makes a huge difference. I often listen to playlists with long chill out sessions, indie bands and occasionally some dance tunes for when I need wake myself up a bit. Most often you’ll find me streaming music from We Are Hunted for the latest emerging tracks, 8 Tracks for some great playlists, and SoundCloud to listen to particular artist sets.

Other

These are my daily fixes offline that help me do my work online. I drink a lot of white and green herbal tea throughout my day, even in Summer when it’s a bit too hot for tea, but I still love it. I split up my day with lots of little breaks, quite often just to sit out on the front deck and get a hit of Vitamin D, occasionally a good book will join me out there.

My favourite creative activity off the computer is just to paint and doodle, with watercolours or just with black felt pens. I still feel like I’m being productive but it gives me a chance to take my mind off a project while still keeping it active creatively.

Do you have many of the same tools in your daily work toolkit? Have any great suggestions of software, products or systems that make you the most productive that you’d love to share?

A room without books is like a body without a soul. ~ Cicero

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how to turn one of the walls in our living area into a full wall of books. Should I line up a few cheap ikea bookcases, install rows of shelves from the floor to ceiling, or custom build our own design.

One thing is for sure, I have a long way to go in building up a collection large enough to grace this big wall. A loooong way to go.

Image Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

These are some books I currently have in my pile to read.

  • The Last Brother – Nathacha Appanah
  • The Tiger’s Wife - Tea Obreht
  • The Quiet Room - Lori Schiller & Amanda Bennett
  • Open City - Teju Cole
  • The Sense of an Ending - Julian Barnes
  • Swamplandia - Karen Russell

What books are you currently reading or have enjoyed recently?

Firstly I’d love to thank everyone who left such lovely comments and feedback about the new shop, who helped spread the word, and especially to those who purchased their faves to use on their blogs. Be sure to let me know if you’re using any graphics from August Empress on your blog as I’ve love to see them in use.

I hope you all had an enjoyable weekend. Mine was a lot of fun with getting some more quality beach time before Winter gets closer, reading, eating, and finding some new things for our house.

Images 1, 2, 3 – Quite often it’s gorgeous and sunny when I leave home, but overcast when I arrive at the beach. Still enjoyed some relaxing/reading at Main Beach.

Images 4, 5, 6 – A short walk from this beach is one of kikki.K‘s lovely stores, I picked up a few Organisk pads, and the two cutest books with Inspiration & Love quotes. If you take a look at the patterned floor of the front window display, that will soon be mine to place under the glass top of my office desk, I think it’ll look great!

Images 7, 8, 9 – Headed down to Burleigh Heads to check out The Village Markets, and picked up the lovely green bottle including the peacock feathers, and an adorable little teacup candle and saucer. I did forget to take photos at the markets to share, next time!

Images 10, 11, 12 – Hanging out at the beach in Burleigh Heads with my awesome friend Eirin.

Images 13, 14, 15 – A visit to Ikea means getting my hands on some great typographic fabric to make some small curtains for the horizontal windows in my office. They will be hung on a curtain wire, since curtain rods would be too bulky. That will be my project for next weekend!
