I came across this illustration on Pinterest created by artist kiwiTACHAN and immediately thought ‘that’s me’. I often replay past and future conversations in my head, wondering if I should or shouldn’t have said something, or imagining scenarios that never eventuate. Even when I’m designing I will spend too much time on the smallest detail while trying to get inside the head of a client, over time I am learning to try and go with my gut. I’m sure many of you can relate to the illustration too, and while you are overthinking your overthinking, here’s a little timelapse video of how the colourful ‘head explosion’ was created.

  1. That is a gorgeous illustration and hits so close to home with me.

  2. Love the illustration and I know exactly what you mean – I do it too – I wonder if that makes up “glass half empty” type of people – always wondering about the worst case scenario! That’s when I give myself a kick up the tush and say “Just do it!” Hmm – that sounds like a great slogan – wonder if anyone would use it! ;-)

I suppose is does mean we’re not the most optimistic people, but it’s definitely something I want to improve on :)

  4. Nic:

I can definitely relate to this!

  5. Lovely illustration & video! I can very much relate to the over-thinking-mode as well. One of my colleagues wrote about it on her blog this week too, explaining that it is a talent as well as something that keeps us up at night when we’d rather go to sleep. It is a talent in the sense that you process things at a deeper level because you experience them more intensely than others and also because you learn & improve a lot when you think about something so much. And having seen your work Jo and all the attention you put into it, from a website to a blogpost, I think that is exactly what makes it so special! The trick with this talent is probably to set some limits on the over-thinking part and to give yourself permission to stop thinking about it. Still learning about that too!

Thanks so much for this comment Naomi, it’s really nice to hear it spoken about in a positive way also, I’d love to read the post if you could share it. I do think it brings something good to my designs, but sometimes not so much in other areas :)

  6. Your painting is terrific! I like the video as well.
I read your blog alot but don’t comment as often as I should.
    Great post!

  7. Oh I love this painting. I love what you said, too. I know I am like a lot of people, replaying past conversations in my head, but I also do something that until your post, I didn’t realize other people do too! I also often play out future conversations in my head, and I am almost always wrong and then I get upset since what I thought was going to happen, be said, didn’t and so on. In fact one of my items to work on in the New Year is to stop creating these crazy conversations in my head! So yes, I need to get better about over-thinking too! :-)

I have this problem as well. I am always wondering if I can match others in my field and not feeling confident enough to do so. Its something I always struggle with especially bc of the net. I always feel like all my work is not enough.

    jo:

One thing I have learnt is not to compare my work too much to other designers, there’s a good reason a person has contacted you to work for them and you can draw confidence from their belief in you, and just try your best.

  9. I think it’s a gender thing. Of all the things my friends complain about my reaction is often “I think you’re over thinking this.” It happens.

  10. Love it! Thanks for sharing!
