By no means do I consider myself a painter or illustrator, I simply enjoy playing around with watercolours and sketching, as well as creating little elements for designs occasionally. I came across The Sketchbook Project last year and knew I wanted to get involved this year, and it would be a good opportunity to experiment with the new Peerless Transparent Watercolours I bought recently.

The colours of the tube based watercolours I had been using seemed much too dull, especially after scanning the artwork. The Peerless set have the most vibrant colours, and because there are so many colour chips I don’t need to worry about mixing any together to create something quickly. They really are super vibrant!

So I decided that for the project I’d focus on florals and nature inspired imagery, I’ll need to do at least one or two a week to get the sketchbook finished and sent back in time. Here’s the first two entries.

I think you can safely call yourself an illustrator, a painter and an artist :-)

  5. jo:

  7. Wow Jo – you have a real talent!! I can only dream of creating such beautiful pictures. And you are right – the colours are gorgeous!!

  8. Wow, beautiful!
My friend and I were looking at the project last year but we were too late. Didn’t realise it’d come round again.I’m overseas so have I missed the boat again? It only seems to be touring North America this year also? Hmmmm…
It’s great that you’re taking part. Can tell your sketchbook will be a real joy for people to discover!

  9. jo:

The previous one is still touring, around the US and also London and Melbourne. You have until January 15th 2013 to return the sketchbook for it to be in the next tour, so there’s still time.

  10. JP:

Absolutely gorgeous! Did you use pen, or maybe really thin watercolor for the stems of the flowers?

    jo:

JP, I used a waterproof fine line pen to draw those lines before adding more colour on top.

  11. Oh, wow! These are just gorgeous!

I’ve been following your blog for a little while now and I must say, you are an artist! …and I would go as far as to say, very much a painter and illustraitor indeed. I can pick your design work out a mile a way, and I’m going to go all mushy here and say you have been an inspiration for my passion of graphic and web design…Rachael xx

Ps. Now to get me some of those watercolours ;)

    jo:

Thanks so much for your lovely comment Rachael, I’m very grateful for readers like you and so happy that the blog has been inspiring to you x

  12. Jade:

Jo, this is beautiful! I can only say I wish I was half as good as that. The art gene in my family seemed to skip me as even at the grand old age I am now, I’m still only up to drawing stick figures.

  13. rani:

just beautiful!!!! I just started mine too!

  14. These beautiful pictures are wonderful, so joyful … a lovely color palette! Thanks for showing us and inspire us ?

  18. Hello, Jo!
Just discovered your blog, and loving the sketches and your use of watercolor! Makes me want to start one myself. I am just not very good at using watercolor :(I always worked with pencils and pens not much colors…But I guess I should try, right? Anyway, hope to see more of your sketches in the future!
    xo

I really love these. I just bought my own set of those watercolors. I was wondering, how did you get the white highlights on the flowers and background?

    jo:

Hi Carly, I just used white acrylic paint to add some detail back on top of the watercolour :)

  23. Beautiful work, beautiful colours.
